Everyone in Scotland is normally represented by eight MSPs: one elected for their consituency (Eastwood, for example) and seven elected for the larger region in which they live (for example, West Scotland). Scotland is made up of eight regions.

Lothian Facts

Red Moss at Balerno is a small wildlife reserve with a 6 metre deep peat bog. A boardwalk is needed to access the site as the peat forms a waterlogged dome that is more than 95% water.

Edinburgh Airport control tower is as high as 12 double decker buses stacked on top of each other. There are 324 steps to the top.

Astronomy has been taught in Edinburgh since the town’s college opened in 1583. The current Royal Observatory at Blackford Hill replaced the once on Calton Hill in 1896.

Almond Valley Heritage Centre in Livingston is home to the Museum of the Scottish Shale Oil Industry and has a narrow gauge railway which replicates those used to transport the shale between the mine and the oilworks.

A statue of Youth stands on the top of the dome of Edinburgh University’s Old College.
