Parliament at Holyrood
The Scottish Parliament building is in Edinburgh. Here, MSPs meet to work in committees, hold debates and question the Scottish Government. If you would like to visit the building, you can get free tickets for debates, Question Times and committees, or on non-business days, book a place on a free tour to find out about the work of Parliament and the Parliament building.
Garthamlock Water tower is the largest and second highest water storage tower in Britain. It can hold 4.5 million litres of water (1,000,000 gallons). It was built between 1956-58 to supply new public housing built by Glasgow Corporation.
Springburn Park Winter garden was Scotland’s largest structure of its kind in Scotland at approximately 180ft long and 9060sqft in area. It fell into disrepair in the 1980s and there is now an ambitious restoration and rejuvenation project underway.
Springburn is built on seven hills (Springburn Hill, Keppochhill, Sighthill, Balgrayhill, Petershill, Barnhill and Stobhill). The top of Springburnhill is the highest point in Glasgow.
The Heavy Horse statue beside the M8 is 4.5 metres tall at the head and is made of galvanised steel round bars.
Crookston Castle is now a ruin but you can still see its unusual construction – a central square tower surrounded by four square corner towers.
Fossil Grove is in Victoria Park. The fossil trees were uncovered when the park was being landscaped. The tree stumps are the remains of an ancient forest, around 330 million years old. When these trees were alive, Glasgow’s climate was hot, damp and steamy. The trees grew in a tropical swamp similar to today’s Florida Everglades.
The Finnieston Crane is a disused giant cantilever crane which was used for loading huge locomotives onto ships for export around the world. It is one of four which can be seen along the River Clyde. It is thought there are only eleven giant cantilever cranes remaining worldwide.
